Week 6 Reflection!

In this week’s class, we discussed a very important topic of conversation! A topic my classmates and I could spend hours talking about, AI. Specifically ChatGPT! The use of AI and technology, whether it generates text or images, has continued to be an issue of debate for us. However, the advancement of these technologies continues to affect the education system, whether we prefer it to or not!

So what is ChatGPT? Let’s ask ChatGPT!

According to ChatGPT, ChatGPT is ” a language model developed by OpenAI, based on the GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) architecture. It is designed to generate human-like responses in natural language based on the input it receives. ChatGPT is trained on a diverse range of internet text and has the ability to understand context and generate coherent and contextually relevant responses in a conversational manner.”

There are varying opinions on the use of AI. People’s perspectives on AI often depend on their background, experiences, and values! Many people are optimistic about the potential benefits of AI. They believe that AI can lead to significant advancements in various fields, such as healthcare, education, and industry. On the other hand, there are concerns about the ethical and societal implications of AI. Some worry about job displacement due to automation, loss of privacy, bias in AI algorithms, and the potential for misuse. Some individuals even express fear about the unintended consequences of advanced AI systems, including the potential for machines to surpass human intelligence (superintelligence) and act in ways that are detrimental to humanity.

These viewpoints and thought processes mostly center around the larger AI technology that most immediately think of when hearing the words artificial intelligence! We spoke about smaller AI technologies that we use on more of a daily basis, and it shocked me! I listen to music on Spotify more than once a day. Spotify is constantly collecting data about the genres of music, artists, and songs I listen to, and then using said information to create playlists full of new artists and songs the app thinks I would like based on the data! Another example is Netflix! Netflix suggests different movies and tv shows based on what the account user has been viewing, or already viewed. These are less visible, yet advanced AI technologies that we use so often that they are very normalized in our day to day activities.
