Week 4 Reflection!

In today’s class, we had guest speaker, and tech professional, Rich McCue, share his knowledge about creating videos for education. I have used software such as iMovie in the past, so I was really excited to get to try screencasting for the first time! This is a screencast video of myself, capturing my first attempt at the process! I opened Zoom, hosted a meeting with just myself, and then used Screencastify to do the rest!

There are many ways in which I can use video to support learners and learning in my classroom! Here are a couple of ways I came up with after this class! :

  1. Instructional Videos
  • Create short instructional videos to explain complex concepts, procedures, or assignments. These can be shared with students before or after the class to reinforce learning.
  • Use platforms like YouTube or educational video hosting services to store and share your videos.

2. Flipped Classroom

  • Implement a flipped classroom model by assigning video lectures or lessons as homework. This allows students to learn at their own pace and use class time for discussions, activities, and problem-solving.

3. Virtual Field Trips

  • Take students on virtual field trips using video content. Explore museums, historical sites, or laboratories through virtual tours or pre-recorded videos.

4. Guest Speakers Via Video Conferencing

  • Arrange virtual guest speakers or experts to deliver talks or presentations through video conferencing tools. This provides students with diverse perspectives and real-world insights.

5. Student Projects

  • Encourage students to create their own educational videos as part of a project. This can improve their research, communication, and digital literacy skills.

6. Interactive Video Platforms

  • Explore interactive video platforms that allow you to embed questions, quizzes, or discussions within the video content. This can help keep students engaged and check their comprehension.

Why will Video Technology Benefit my Students?

Incorporating videos into the classroom can yield a myriad of benefits for students! Visual aids in the form of instructional videos provide a dynamic supplement to traditional teaching methods, catering to diverse learners and promoting better understanding of complex concepts. The flexibility of video content allows students to revisit material at their own pace, stopping and starting where they see fit. Engaging and interactive videos can capture students’ attention, making the learning process more enjoyable and enhancing overall retention. Real-world applications demonstrated through videos bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical understanding, instilling a deeper appreciation for the subject matter. Furthermore, utilizing videos in assessments, such as quizzes and projects, encourages active participation and collaboration, fostering critical thinking skills. Overall, the incorporation of videos in the classroom serves as a valuable tool to enrich the learning experience, promote engagement, and cater to the diverse needs of students.

I also had the opportunity to experiment with ClipChamp! I wanted to show two videos, one generated by Ai, and the other made by me.

AI Generated:

My Video:

In reflection, the AI generated video was a much faster process. That being said, the video was not really what I was hoping for. The video I created took a longer time to learn and put together, however I had so much freedom and resources available to me. With practice, this will be a super awesome way to make my teaching more accessible for my future students!
